I am not sure if I want to hug Krissy for Monday’s entry (Nov. 17th) or scream because I became so fascinated reading about the topic that I stayed up way too late! (Kidding, Krissy. You know I adore you!)
She talked about being fascinated with the phenomenon known as “synesthesia”. Basically, it is defined as “a phenomenon whereby one sense is stimulated and another also responds i.e., when words have colors or tastes have shapes.” For example, the letter “N”. “N” is yellow. You say “N”, I “see” yellow. The brains assigns colors to the letters. Numbers, too. Emotions have colors as well. And no, when you say “N” I don’t literally see a big yellow N sitting in front of me. Now, that would be weird. (Although, the more I read on it, there really are cases where people actually do “see” the color, rather than just in their mind’s eye. That’s not me.) I just think “N” in my mind and that “N” is yellow. Make sense? Please tell me you do this, too. Lie if you must.
I thought this was how everyone’s mind works. Until I read her post. And then her comments. I was the only one (besides her daughter) that has a mind that works this way. It blew me away. How do you people think in black and white?
I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again: I would give anything to jump into the mind of someone else and experience how someone else’s mind works. The more I learn, the more I realize I don’t quite think the way other people do. (Shuddup with the smartass comments if you know me personally.)
So do you do this? Are you shaking your head in bafflement that I do? And really, now, it is a real thing. It isn’t the after effects of drugs. Honest. I remember thinking this way forever.
I found a great article on it here. Just in case you are wondering what in the world I am talking about.
